While grand landscape photography captures the beauty and magnificence of a large scene, intimate landscape photography focuses on small, unique parts of that landscape and extracts from the overall scene. Much landscape photography sets out to capture grand scenes and vast expanses, monolithic land features, dramatic skies, and amazing displays of natural light from dawn to sunrise and sunset to dusk. Such images draw their force from the sheer magnitude of the elements.
Of Significance - A New Genre of Fine Art is Born
Back in 1979, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York held its first ever exhibition of color photography, celebrating the work of a pioneer of color photography named Eliot Porter. The exhibit was simply titled "Intimate Landscapes". The year also marked the acceptance of color photography as a Fine Art. Porter had been making color photographs since the 1940's, and his contributions to nature photography transformed the genre. He also played an important role in the conservation movement as his work was influential in the passage of the Wilderness Act. Eliot Porter to this day is a huge influence on my approach to searching for and photographing Intimate landscapes.
My Approach to this Unique Art
Unless I'm photographing a dramatic sunset or sunrise, I look for scenes that exclude the sky to simplify the composition. The smaller landscape within the grand landscape. By exploring a subject deliberately, you will find an infinite array of graceful lines, patterns, sculpted forms and subtle variations of color and tone. Mastering photographic techniques helps to further pre-visualize the final print, capturing the rhythm or ethereal essence within the greater landscape. Intimate landscapes lend themselves to original creative work, and to the much-desired development of the Fine Art photographers unique personal style. An intimate landscape depends primarily on the subjective nature and personal visions of the artist.
